In the here today, gone tomorrow South Beach nightlife scene, Rokbar had always been a constant. For seven years, locals, looking for an escape from tourists and bachelorette parties, treated Rokbar as their haven. However, as of Monday, Rokbar has decided to close their doors for good.
It came as an unwelcome surprise to most, as the rumor circulated through Miami social circles. One of the last places to offer open format music, which will more than likely be replaced by another well-meaning nightlife entrepreneur specializing in the real “South Beach” experience, is no longer.
Rokbar, originally founded by Tommy Lee Jones in 2004 attracted a bevy of musical acts including MSTRKRFT, Theophilus London, Neon Indian, LA Riots, the Misshapes all before they were cool.
According to statements released by the lounge’s Creative Director, while they had “big plans” for a relaunch of Rokbar, the owner had ultimately decided that his heart was no longer in it. Rokbar officially closed their doors as of June 13th.
Like all good things, Rokbar has come to an end, so we’ll have to savor the memories of our early twenties, post 4am, Parliament Light in hand, belting out the lyrics to some dance remix of Take Me Home Tonight, as we eye-fucked the mysterious guy/girl in the corner…because let’s be serious, Rokbar brought out the rock star in all of us.
